Mixed scrap gets weighed at the lowest applicable rate. Sorted scrap gets each material's full price. Here's how to sort in five steps.
- Separate metals. Keep copper and brass apart from iron and steel — they're worth 20 to 40 times more per kilo. A magnet helps: iron sticks, copper and brass don't.
- Keep paper dry. Stack newspapers and books separately from cardboard cartons, and keep both away from damp floors.
- Rinse and flatten plastic. Clean, flattened PET bottles are easier to weigh and fetch a better rate.
- Count bottles and cans. These are priced per piece, so a rough count speeds things up.
- Box up electronics. Put phones, chargers, cables and small gadgets in one box so nothing gets missed.
